Digital format of my final project for the Senior Art Show at Pepperdine University. In the Senior Art show I showed my photography on a old slide projector. In this digital version I created the same sense of nostalgia, as well as adding music ("There Are Birds" by The Ruby Suns).
Artist's Statement: Human beings want to feel connected to the world around us, yet we tend to look at objects superficially and fail to see the connections that link them together. Every single thing in the universe, whether man, animal, plant, inanimate, or man-made, is made of the same matter, the same atomic particles, the same essential components, creating an inherent connection between them. People have the ability to perceive these connections on an intellectual level and on an emotional level. This emotional interaction helps us feel empathy with objects outside ourselves, linking us to all things in the universe. Subjectivity then defines our responses to all things, and therefore the potential ability we have to impact the world. This collection of photos reflects the relationship between all objects. My photos are snapshots of everyday things, things that we all see but sometimes fail to notice. The journeys I took to capture these images have made me more aware of the connections in the world. While most of the pictures were taken within a three-week time span throughout diverse areas of California such as Downtown LA, Venice Beach, the Mojave Desert, Santa Cruz Mountains and Malibu, I also included images from Oklahoma City, Turkey, and Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. I juxtaposed these photos to show the natural and ironic parallels between objects, people, animals, and specific scenes. Physical similarities or emotional sensations link the images together to evoke a response from the viewer and express the overarching relationship between all things in the universe.
